Of Projects That Get In The Backburner

First and foremost, thank you for the comments about the fair quilts. I was tickled pink when I found out I had two new ribbons and the high lasted for days when I read the comments. I couldn't be happier. And when I read the comments on Rosa's blog post about me, I couldn't help but laughing out loud. Old little lady in the works here :)

Now a week later, it's time to focus and get back on the swing of things. I pondered whether to start something new or pick up projects that get stuck in the backburner. I don't want to call them UFOs because in my mind, I know I want to finish them... they just somehow tend to get pushed aside to do smaller, more manageable things that get started and finished in a reasonable amount of time. The brain won this time and I figured I would pick up these two at least for the moment. Nearly Insane, started YEARS ago and an appliqué quilt from Jeana Kimball. Eli and I got going on the appliqué blocks in early 2005. We chose different styles, Eli's has a blue-black batik background and bright batiks and mine was going to be a traditional red-green with a natural color background. We made one block and life got on the way. The poor block has been pinned to my wall ever since. Monday, I decided it was time to pick it up again and at least make one more block so the first one wouldn't be lonely :) If I manage to stick to it, I'll make alternate basket and X blocks. We'll see how far I get. I had seen a gorgeous appliqué quilt in one of the coffee table books I have and the original plan was to set them like that quilt. I'll play it by ear as I go.

The Nearly Insane quilt is my never ending quilt by now. I have had it in the works since the summer of 2004. Rosa and I will start working on them blocks again this coming week. It's nice to have a piecing companion to stay motivated and on task... even though I slacked off last time and my evil # 18 is not finished yet. Rosa's turned out magnificently!

Upon seeing the virtual wall and realizing that the top half is almost all pieced, I am pondering whether to start joining blocks (though I haven't found a sashing fabric yet, only the cornerstone fabric), wait till they are all done, start piecing triangles for the border or leave them all for the end.

The weather is getting slightly cooler too, so it might be time to bring out the "it's almost been quilted for two years" quilt and actually sleep under it before spring comes. I've been saying that for the last two years!


Lo primero, gracias por todos los comentarios que habeis escrito sobre los quilts que llevé a la feria. Me puse más contenta que unas castañuelas cuando ví los floripondios, y seguí contentísima los siguientes dias cuando fui leyendo los comentarios. No podría haber estado más feliz. Y cuando leí los del blog de Rosa, aún me tuve que reir. Lo de la viejecita es sólo cuestión de tiempo :)

Una semana después y ya es hora de dejar de hacer el vago y ponerme con algo en serio. Estuve debatiendo si debería empezar algo nuevo o coger alguno de las cosas que tengo sin terminar. No me gusta llamarlos UFOs porque por lo menos en mi cabeza pienso terminarlos algún dia. Es simplemente que son proyectos gigantescos y de vez en cuando necesito dejarlos para hacer algo que se pueda ver terminado en una cantidad razonable de tiempo. De momento ha ganado el cerebro y voy a seguir con dos de los que tengo empezados: el Nearly Insane y unos bloques de apliqué de Jeana Kimball. Eli y yo decidimos empezar los bloques de aplicado a principios del 2005. Hicimos uno y la vida se metió por medio y no continuamos. El de Eli lleva un fondo de batik azul-negro y batiks de colores brillantes y el mio un fondo natural y rojo y verde, como los de aplicado tradicional del siglo XIX. El pobre bloque solitario lleva en mi pared más de un año. Y por fín el lunes decidí que necesita un compañero por lo menos para no encontrarse tan solo. He pensado hacer bloques de cestas/jarrones y bloques con forma de X, alternando. Cuando empecé, había encontrado un edredón antiguo en uno de esos libros con fotos y sin patrones que me gustó mucho y pensé usar los bloques para hacer uno parecido. Veremos en que queda.

El Nearly Insane es la historia de nunca acabar. Lo empecé en el verano del 2004. Rosa y yo vamos a empezar a hacer bloques otra vez la semana que entra. Me gusta tener una compañera de fatigas para seguir motivada y continuar con la tarea... aunque antes del verano no fuí capaz de terminar el odioso #18. Rosa lo terminó y el suyo es magnífico!

Cuando me dí cuenta de que casi tengo la mitad superior terminada, me dió por pensar si debería empezar a unir bloques (aunque por ahora no he comprado la tela para las tiras de separación, si que tengo la de las esquinas). Quizá debería dejarlo para el final, o quizá debería obligarme a empezar a coser los triángulos del borde para no morirme de aburrimiento cuando tenga el centro del top terminado.

El tiempo empieza a refrescar, así que también puede que sea hora de que saque el quilt que lleva casi casi acolchado dos años y lo termine de una vez. Cada otoño digo que voy a dormir con él antes de que llegue la primavera y cada primavera llega y sigue a medias!
