To Everything There Is A Season

Fall is here again. It has happened overnight, we've gone from sun and warmth to rain and chilly temperatures. Somehow, the rain we didn't get all summer long seems to be falling all at once. I noticed the change of the light and the chilly nose while going for a walk on Sunday morning. I love Sunday morning walks, right at dawn, while the whole town seems to be asleep.

Ha llegado el otoño, parece que de repente. Hemos pasado en unos dias del sol y el calor a la lluvia y las temperaturas bajas. Toda la lluvia que necesitamos durante el verano, está cayendo a cubos esta semana. Me dí cuenta del principio del cambio el domingo por la mañana cuando salí a dar un paseo. Me encanta salir los domingos al amanecer cuando las calles están vacías y parece que el pueblo está dormido.

Seems like the perfect time for a finish ten years in the making. The red quilt is done, finally. I put the last stitch on the binding half hour or so ago. It's being washed as I type and I hope to be sleeping under it tonight. I started buying fabric for it the first of January 1997, started piecing it during that summer. The top was done for years before I even layered it, sometime around 2000. It kept being pushed back in the list of "to-dos" till last spring when I decided it was time to finish it. Then, it sat all summer waiting for binding. With the chilly weather that came in Sunday, there was no possible excuse. Got the binding ready on Monday, used Ellita to sew it to the front, without a hitch and now it's finally a quilt! Things I've learned from it: buy good batting no matter what, and if one decides to use quilt basting spray to hold the layers for hand quilting, use it very, very, very, VERY sparingly. It was extremely difficult to quilt, and it might just be the reason why I "forgot" about it so many times.

Parece que el tiempo otoñal me ha animado para terminar por fin el quilt que llevaba haciendo los últimos diez años. He cosido la última puntada hace media hora y ahora está en la lavadora. Esta noche dormiré tapada con él. Empecé a comprar telas para hacerlo el 1 de enero de 1997, cosí el top durante ese verano. Lo tuve en espera hasta por lo menos el 2000, cuando por fín lo preparé para acolchar. Y seguí dejándolo para hacer otras cosas hasta la primavera pasada cuando decidí que ya era hora de acabarlo. Dejé el biés para cuando hiciese menos calor, y el domingo, cuando empezó a refrescar me dije que era imposible encontrar nuevas excusas. Usé Ellita para coser el biés, se portó de maravilla y por fín puedo decir que es un quilt! Lo que he aprendido de éste quilt: Compra siempre la mejor calidad de guata y si usas pegamento en spray para sujetar las capas y acolchar a mano, usa muy, muy, muy MUY poco. Creo que la dificultad en acolchar ha sido una de las razones por las que lo he dejado tantas veces.
