The Lives And Times Of A Quilter's Cats

Random thoughts of three or four cats and I about the importance of wearing slippers if you happen to share your home with a quiltmaker who drops pins, and other similar and related nonsense, from fabric to gardening and of course, about the cats who inspire all this madness. En inglés y en español.

Two pictures

Here it is, the whole thing, pink as all get out! My mom liked Musgo's quilt so much, I've decided to give her this one as well (for her, not for my little brother :)

And here is a page of the quilt journal, four years ago almost to the date:

Quilt Journal

Sunday, coupons in hand, I headed for Joann's to get the batting and backing for the pink quilt that I had started piecing back in August 2007. I needed to add the two borders around the pieced blocks. Digging thru my boxes of fabric, I found 1/2 yd of an old beigey print from one of the first quilts I made, and it worked just fine. I had to piece strips to get the lenght, but once it is quilted, it won't be as noticeable. I picked Fairfield's 80/20 again, as I loved the way it puckered up when I washed the 30's quilt I just had finished.

As I do with all quilts, I wrote down a little paragraph in my quilt journal. I think it is important (at least for me), to add some tidbits that might just help someone in the future to understand what was happening while I was making any given quilt... hoping against hope that quilts and journal will stay together. In this case, I noted the price of batting and backing and the fact the store was jam-packed with shoppers. As I keep quilting, I might add historical notes to the journal -presidential inauguration a few days away-.

Reading back, I went from mundane facts -the Michael Jackson trial's veredict on June 13th, 2005, while piecing block #80 of Nearly Insane-, to historical ones, like the newscast announcing Saddam Hussein's death when I was sewing NI's block #49 on Dec. 29th., 2006. And even the fact Mars was closest to Earth in 60.000 years on August 27th., 2005 while I was piecing stars for the Sarah Jonhson quilt and I was listening to the radio then. Weather notes, price of fabric, anniversaries, deaths, births, snippets of fabric taped to the pages, photos... a little bit of everything. I couldn't remember half of them, it was a nice trip down memory lane.

Waste Not, Want Not

I've layered a top I had pieced years ago. If it looks familiar, it might be the fact half my work was done when I started piecing it... leftover hts from the big red quilt's border. It's been sitting on the to-be-quilted pile for a handful of years, because I thought it needed a border. After seeing it again, I decided against it. It looks good to me as it is. I quilted on it during the last few days, nothing much, just a little outline work and a few extra lines here and there. Hopefully, it'll be no longer a UFO in a few days' time.

To Everything There Is A Season

Fall is here again. It has happened overnight, we've gone from sun and warmth to rain and chilly temperatures. Somehow, the rain we didn't get all summer long seems to be falling all at once. I noticed the change of the light and the chilly nose while going for a walk on Sunday morning. I love Sunday morning walks, right at dawn, while the whole town seems to be asleep.

Seems like the perfect time for a finish ten years in the making. The red quilt is done, finally. I put the last stitch on the binding half hour or so ago. It's being washed as I type and I hope to be sleeping under it tonight. I started buying fabric for it the first of January 1997, started piecing it during that summer. The top was done for years before I even layered it, sometime around 2000. It kept being pushed back in the list of "to-dos" till last spring when I decided it was time to finish it. Then, it sat all summer waiting for binding. With the chilly weather that came in Sunday, there was no possible excuse. Got the binding ready on Monday, used Ellita to sew it to the front, without a hitch and now it's finally a quilt! Things I've learned from it: buy good batting no matter what, and if one decides to use quilt basting spray to hold the layers for hand quilting, use it very, very, very, VERY sparingly. It was extremely difficult to quilt, and it might just be the reason why I "forgot" about it so many times.

Starting With A Clean Slate

That's what it felt like around seven last night when I finally left my sewing room with a big sigh. Jeri and I had decided to show each other pictures of our stash... I HAD to get to my stash first in order to show her. My room was a disaster area. It is always somewhat chaotic, but for the last several months, I had been pulling out stuff with total abandon, and it showed :) This is, I kid you not, the only semi organized part of a decent sized room. Only reason it was clean was the fact I had been sewing the pillows. Once I got to pulling out things, emptying shelves, drawers, surfaces and even floor space, I realized how many UFOS I had been hiding from myself. It really surprised me to see blocks I had forgotten all about, bags of them. Some, I decided it was time to let go of, some might become challenges to at least become tops. Now that I can get my paws on them, I'll be taking pictures and sharing.

On the up and up, one more Nearly Insane block done: number 18 came out to be 229 pieces. All I can say, after that one, I am ready for anything! Six to go, and a new project in mind to be completed in three months.

Thank you Jeri for motivating me to face the music and start the year and the new project with a clean(er) slate!
