The Lives And Times Of A Quilter's Cats

Random thoughts of three or four cats and I about the importance of wearing slippers if you happen to share your home with a quiltmaker who drops pins, and other similar and related nonsense, from fabric to gardening and of course, about the cats who inspire all this madness. En inglés y en español.

Cat Dreams?

What's a kitten to do when it's cold outside? Cuddle up with an old quilt and suck on his thumb, dreaming of who knows what.

Kirbee, growing but still wanting to be the baby cat. He only stays still when he's asleep.

The Show Must Go On

One of the dubious advantages of living in the Far West is the yearly rodeo. Every September the rodeo comes to town, four days of excitement for those who like horses and bullriding and such. I've been a couple of times, it's really an experience seen thru the eyes of a foreigner. This year, we happened to be downtown in time to see the rodeo parade. Law enforcement vehicles, marching bands and of course, the royalty from the various rodeos nearby. Candy tossed, kids excited, horses and horse poop "picker uppers", the whole nine yards.

As far as I am concerned, the best part (keeping in mind I am not very fond of horses), was Lewiston's High School Marching Band and, more specifically their mascot. Obviously, the poor tiger must have been suffering from a terribly sore throat, but as the best performers know, the show must go on!

Fall

Night frost brings out the best of fall color. It's really a treat to be surrounded by the warm, rich colors. Squirrels even have time to pose on early Sunday mornings. In spite of the cold, it's worth it to go out and enjoy it, since it won't last very long.

And one finish, the small red quilt was completed last week. It's been hanging on the wall for a week already, but I hadn't had a chance to take a picture till today. Another UFO bites the dust! As usual, the full size picture of it seems not to want to work properly, but you can see it at: http://picasaweb.google.com/mlbatres/TheLivesAndTimesOfAQuilterSCats

To Everything There Is A Season

Fall is here again. It has happened overnight, we've gone from sun and warmth to rain and chilly temperatures. Somehow, the rain we didn't get all summer long seems to be falling all at once. I noticed the change of the light and the chilly nose while going for a walk on Sunday morning. I love Sunday morning walks, right at dawn, while the whole town seems to be asleep.

Seems like the perfect time for a finish ten years in the making. The red quilt is done, finally. I put the last stitch on the binding half hour or so ago. It's being washed as I type and I hope to be sleeping under it tonight. I started buying fabric for it the first of January 1997, started piecing it during that summer. The top was done for years before I even layered it, sometime around 2000. It kept being pushed back in the list of "to-dos" till last spring when I decided it was time to finish it. Then, it sat all summer waiting for binding. With the chilly weather that came in Sunday, there was no possible excuse. Got the binding ready on Monday, used Ellita to sew it to the front, without a hitch and now it's finally a quilt! Things I've learned from it: buy good batting no matter what, and if one decides to use quilt basting spray to hold the layers for hand quilting, use it very, very, very, VERY sparingly. It was extremely difficult to quilt, and it might just be the reason why I "forgot" about it so many times.
