Winter Solstice

What do you do when this is what you wake up to? Stay indoors, check the Weather Channel for severe weather updates, drink hot chocolate and bind a quilt. I had planned on some solstice seed planting, but it will have to wait for a sunny day. It's really not that much snow, about six inches, but after a week of temperatures well below freezing, this was literally like the icing on the cake.


Qué se puede hacer en un domingo cuando te levantas y esto es lo que ves? Enchufas la tele para ver el parte meteorológico, te preparas una taza de chocolate calentito y te pones con el ribete de un edredón. Había planeado plantar algunas semillas para celebrar el solsticio, pero tendrán que esperar a un día que por lo menos haga un poco de sol. No es que haya nevado mucho, solamente seis pulgadas o por ahí, pero sigue nevando y después de pasar una semana en la que no hemos visto temperaturas sobre cero, ha sido la gota que colmó el vaso.

Binding a quilt with odd angles isn't a walk on the park. I started last night and got frustrated mighty quick. I'm binding by hand, using single fold bias binding. I can see a few days worth of work ahead of me. On the happy side of things, I got pictures of the travel bug quilt! :) Here is a photo of the back with the location of places it has seen.

Poner el ribete en un edredón con ángulos raros es dificil. Empecé anoche y tardé como diez minutos en frustrarme. Lo estoy cosiendo a mano, usando cinta bies sencilla. A Travel Bug: What Is That?

I realized readers might or might not know the story of the "civil war soldier quilt travel bug". What is a travel bug?. Go check www.geocaching.com and once there, click on the trackable items on the bar on the side. You can read all about it there on the FAQ.

My own travel bug is a mini quilt and the mission I assigned it was to travel to Civil War sites. I included a Pigma pen and asked that people would sign the back of it when they moved it. It started travelling back in February 2006. So far, it has been to Washington, Oregon, California, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Some people have been kind enough to take it to historical sites and take pictures of it there and post them in the travel bug's page:

Me he dado cuenta que algunos de los lectores del blog puede que no sepan la historia del "bicho viajero". Podeís ver lo que son en: http://www.geocaching-hispano.com/virus_viajeros.htm (no entiendo porqué les llaman virus, pero en fín, así son las traducciones. No tiene absolutamente nada que ver con un virus).

Mi bicho viajero es un mini quilt inspirado en los usados por los soldados de la guerra de secesión entre los estados (1861-65). La misión del trotamundos era que lo llevasen a sitios relacionados con la guerra civil americana. Añadí un Pigma para que la gente que lo moviese, lo firmase en la trasera. Empezó su viaje en febrero del 2006, y de momento ha estado en Washington, Oregon, California, Virginia y Pennsylvania. Algunas de las personas que lo han movido, han tenido la amabilidad de hacerle fotos en sitios históricos y colocarlas en su página:

Nearly There

After having travelled 4358.3 miles, the little soldier quilt has nearly finished its mission. Having stayed in several places in Pennsylvania for a while, it's been picked up by someone who will finally move it to Virginia, and once there, it will be picked up by my friend Vern and travel safely back home via mail.

Después de viajar 4358.3 millas (unos 7014 km.), el quilt viajero casi ha terminado su misión. Ha pasado varios meses en Pennsylvania, y ahora ha sido recogido por una persona que lo llevará a Virginia donde mi amigo Vern lo recogerá y me lo mandará de regreso via correo normal.

The picture was taken in Pennsylvania, near the grave of Corporal George E. Lowery, 138th. Regiment, PA Volunteers, Company C. Mustered into service on August 20th, 1862. He was wounded at Wilderness, VA May 6th, 1864. Mustered out of service with his company on June 13th, 1865. Corporal Lowery rests at St. Thomas Church Cemetery, Whitemarch, Fort Washington, PA.

La foto fue tomada en Pennsylvania, cerca de la tumba del Corporal George E. Lowery, del Regimiento 138 de los Pennsylvania Volunteers. La compañía entró en servicio el 20 de agosto de 1862. Corporal Lowery fue herido en la batalla de Wilderness en Virginia el 6 de mayo de 1864. Terminó su servicio el día 13 de junio de 1865. Sus restos descansan en el cementerio de la iglesia de St. Thomas, Whitemarch, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania.

The Travel Bug Visits Arlington

One more stop for my travelling quilt: Arlington National Cemetery, Va. I really never expected it to make it this far, and the thrill of seeing pictures when they arrive is just undescribable.

The quilt is still in unbelievable good shape, considering it's been in a sandwich baggie for a year now, in tupperware containers and ammo cans in the middle of nowhere :)

Hoy me han llegado fotos de mi quilt viajero en su visita al cementerio nacional de Arlington, en Virginia. No esperaba cuando lo mandé que llegase hasta allí, y cada vez que recibo fotos y la noticia de que lo han llevado a algún sitio es dificil de describir.
