The Lives And Times Of A Quilter's Cats

Random thoughts of three or four cats and I about the importance of wearing slippers if you happen to share your home with a quiltmaker who drops pins, and other similar and related nonsense, from fabric to gardening and of course, about the cats who inspire all this madness. En inglés y en español.

Confederate Courtship And Thread

"Our sewing-thread was of our own make. Spools of "Coats' " thread, which was universally used in the South before the war, had long been forgotten."... "Bunch thread from the cotton mill, number twelve, made very strong sewing thread, but little could we afford of that ; it was exceedingly scarce."
Parthenia Antoinette Hague, A Blockaded Family, Life In Southern Alabama During The Civil War

I've pieced all the center blocks for Confederate Courtship now. As I started a new spool of thread, Coats, I remembered the book A Blockaded Family. I've been re-reading it, as I piece blocks. Parthenia Hague was a schoolteacher working on an Alabama plantation during the war years. The book is available at:

Lo he estado releyendo mientras coso.

Pink In Spring

It's done! As of this afternoon, the binding is finished, it's been washed and dried and it just needs a label. The technical details: machine pieced, hand quilted, 64" x 64" (it shrunk a lot with the heavy quilting and the wash). One of the red fabrics did run a little, in spite of being prewashed, but it's not very noticeable.

Acabado!

Of Little Brothers

I'm sure some of you can relate. You've been a only child for years, and all of a sudden, a little brother springs up. Up to then, you've been the one spoiled and praised and out of the clear blue, the little brother can do no wrong. That's what happened to me... but my little brother is of the four legged persuasion. Literally, my mother's Persian cat, Musgo. Ours is a hate-hate relationship, understandably :) In spite of it, he will get the newest quilt.

Techincal details: measures 1.50 m. x 1.20 m. Hand quilted, machine pieced. I finished the binding on the 26th of Decemeber. The label has a little poem dedicated to my furry little brother.

Cosido a máquina, acolchado a mano.

tu pellejo tan hermoso
(como el mío)
y melena de león,
acabarán cual visón
en el cuello de mi abrigo.

But Have You Ever Seen A Panther That Is Pink? Think!

"Has mother slipped a cog? That is so PINK!". Shrillbert was thinking outloud while looking at the design wall when I was taking pictures. Maybe he was reading my mind... it's really very, extremely, almost obnoxiously pink!

I started sewing rows this week. Admittedly, the color isn't as loud as it appears in the picture, but no doubt, it looks as if a bottle of Pepto Bismol exploded in my room. I wasn't all that sure at first, but it's growing on me, slowly but surely.

Meanwhile, Phoebe decided to blame it on the overdose of catnip. Maybe it affected us both? :) Here she is, a few days ago, helping me clean up some catnip seeds.
