Of How Times Flies

I'm alive and quilting. It seems as if time flies when you are having fun... or at least quilting fun. Winter has arrived early this year, so it's been perfect for sitting with a big quilt on my lap and whittling the hours away stitching.

The Confederate Courtship quilt I pieced during the summer is turning out to be a giant of a project. I decided to quilt with two things one would hope a courtship would end up in: hearts and rings. It has been a slow process, though. The secondary pattern formed is pretty neat. I'll take pictures when the weather improves and dries somewhat, and I can take it outside to spread it on the fence.

Estoy viva y acolchando. Parece mentira como pasa el tiempo de deprisa cuando estás acolchando algo que te gusta. Llegó el invierno con bastante anticipo y apetece sentarse debajo de un quilt tan grande y pasarme las tardes acolchando.

El quilt Confederate Courtship que hice este verano pasado está siendo un verdadero gigante para acolchar. Decidí ponerle dos motivos acolchados que se viesen bien por detrás: corazones y anillos. Las dos cosas que uno espera en que termine un noviazgo. Va lento, pero el patrón que va apareciendo por la trasera me gusta bastante. Le haré fotos fuera para que lo veaís cuando deje de llover/nevar y se seque la valla y el suelo.

Summer's Bounty

It's hotter than Hades today, but I love it. I also love summer's garden bounty! The tomates are ripening, and boy, are they ever good! It's so nice to eat vegetables that taste like vegetables instead of colored cardboard.

Hace más calor que en el infierno hoy, pero lo estoy disfrutando. También estoy disfrutando los resultados del jardín. Los tomates están empezando a madurar y están buenísimos! Me gusta comer verdura que sabe a verdura, en vez de la del super que sabe a corcho de colorines.



On the other side, it's not the best time to quilt. I finished the Confederate Courtship top, but I don't even feel like basting it yet. It's so hot, the idea of sitting down to quilt it makes me break out in a rash.

Y por otro lado, terminé el top del Confederate Courtship, pero ni me apetece hilvanar las capas de momento. Con tanto calor, solo de pensar en sentarme a acolchar con un edredón en el regazo, me da sarpullido.

Summer's Dog Days

Confederate Courtship blocks become, slowly but surely, a quilt top. A little less than half is sewn and, overall, I do like it. It's a huge quilt, blocks being 15 inches finished.

We've been having an extremely hot week. I am not complaining. The plants are, though. I seem to spend hours watering in the morning, just to see everything looking wilted by 4 PM. They do cheer me up in the morning, though.

Of Summer's Guilty Pleasures

We all have them, those summer's guilty pleasures. Whether it is a cup of ice cream, a swim in the pool, laying in the sun... my own, sitting outside at night, smelling the sweet scent of Nicotiana, in full bloom now and listening to the crickets.

And Shrillbert's? Among many others (well, he's a cat after all, it's all about what he wants), making sure he road tests the rows of quilt blocks before I sew them together. Up close, checking for chopped off points, maybe?

Todos los tenemos, los placeres veraniegos. Para unos, es un helado, para otros, un baño en la piscina y para otros, tumbarse al sol... el mio: sentarme fuera por la noche, para oler el perfume de la Nicotiana que ahora florece con ganas y escuchar grillos cantando.

Y el de Shrillbert? Entre muchos otros (al fin y al cabo es un gato, y los gatos se las saben todas en cuanto a placeres), probar los nuevos bloques cosidos en tiras antes de que cosa las tiras juntas. Bien de cerca, inspeccionando quizá a ver si me he cargado alguna punta de triángulo al coserlas?

Store Bought Calicoes

Here are the first sixteen small Confederate Courtship blocks, waiting for their sashing, twenty four need to be made. I've used scraps of red, brown and tan from other quilts, but I'll have to get yardage for the setting triangles. I've included a piece of red from the first quilt I ever attempted (second block from the left, last row). That was back in 1987, I think. It feels like a lifetime ago. It's strange to think I have fabrics that are over twenty years old, but I am glad it is being used finally. I wish I could remember how much I paid for it... I do remember buying it at Clothworld, in Shreveport, Louisiana. It would be interesting to see how much prices have gone up in twenty years' time.

Aquí está la foto de los primeros dieciseis bloques pequeños del Confederate Courtship, esperando sus tiras de separación. Solamente me quedan ocho por hacer. He usado trozos de marrón, rojo y beige de otros edredones, pero tendré que comprar un estampado para los triángulos grandes de todo alrededor. He usado un trozo de rojo que me quedaba del primer edredón que empecé y nunca pasé del primer bloque (el segundo bloque desde la izquierda de la última fila). La tela la compré en 1987, creo. Es raro pensar que tengo un retazo de tela que tiene más de veinte años, pero me alegro de por fín haberle encontrado uso. Me gustaría acordarme de cuánto pagué por ella, pero lo único que recuerdo es que la compré en Clothworld, en Shreveport, Lousiana. Me gustaría poder comparar lo que han subido los precios de las telas en estos veintipico años.

I've pieced all the center blocks for Confederate Courtship now. As I started a new spool of thread, Coats, I remembered the book A Blockaded Family. I've been re-reading it, as I piece blocks. Parthenia Hague was a schoolteacher working on an Alabama plantation during the war years. The book is available at:

Of Confederate Courtships, True Blood And This And That

With several UFOs in the works, I wasn't really planning on starting anything new, but after the Bubblegum Quilt arrived home, my little brother suggested it would be nice to have a quilt on each bed (and how can I resist my little brother?... well, I could easily enough, but you know, it's best not to). I had been appliqueing 8 inch blocks, and I shifted gears, if not too enthusiastically, at least willingly :)

Con varios UFOs por terminar, no había pensado en empezar nada nuevo hasta tener otro terminado, pero el quilt rosa llegó a casa y mi "hermanito" ha dicho que quiere otro edredón para la tercera cama (y como me puedo resistir a lo que el "hermanito" pide? Facilmente, supongo, pero es mejor no cabrearle mucho :) Había estado aplicando unos bloques de 8 pulgadas para un wallhanging, asi que he cambiado de marcha, puede que con poco entusiasmo, pero con ganas.

I've had the book Log Cabin Fever: Innovative Designs for Traditional Quilts for a few years, and had used one of its patterns for a baby quilt. The quilt on the cover, Confederate Courtship had attracted me from the moment I laid eyes on it. After talking to my mother today, it took me about five minutes to decide that I was going to try to get it started. I'm not a good machine piecer, but this is a large quilt, so in the interest of time, I'm following the book's instructions for the most part, to rotary cut and machine piece the top. The first block hasn't been easy, I haven't touched the machine in months. I hate quarter square triangles, but I love the quilt, from the name to the colors, to the blocks on point. It will be worth the effort.

Hice un edredón del libro Log Cabin Fever: Innovative Designs for Traditional Quilts, un edredón de cuna hace unos años. El quilt de la primera página me enamoró desde el momento que ví el libro. Se llama Confederate Courtship (Noviazgo de la Confederacion, los Confederados eran los soldados que lucharon en el lado sureño en la guerra entre los estados). Después de hablar con mi madre hoy y pensármelo cinco minutos, decidí que era hora de empezarlo. No se me dá muy allá coser a máquina y cortar con el método rápido, pero como es un edredón grandote y pensando en querer coser el top durante el verano, lo voy a hacer así. Hace meses que no tocaba la máquina, y entre eso y que el cutter y yo nos llevamos regular, y que odio los triángulos de cuatro piezas... en fín, con todo y con eso el quilt me tiene enamorada, me gustan los colores, el diseño, los bloques. Va a merecer la pena el esfuerzo.


And how does this tie with True Blood? Though I hardly watch television, I got hooked on the HBO series, True Blood. After watching one episode, I just had to read Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series of novels. I lived in Northwest Louisiana for years, in a city a stone's throw away from Bon Temps, the fictional town in which this book's series is centered. My love for quilts developed there, as did my interest in the Civil War. I liked everything about the area, loved the people, the landscape, the weather -for the most part, aside from the horrible thunderstorms-. Ms. Harris' descriptions of people and places bring me back over and over again to the years I spent there. My favorite character in the series is Bill Compton, the vampire born in Bon Temps. I'm totally infatuated with Vampire Bill, who fought for the Confederacy while he still was alive. He appears to be the southern gentleman with an "undead" twist. Simply enchanting!

Y qué tiene que ver esto con la serie "True Blood"? De que ví el primer episodio de la serie de HBO, quise leer los libros en los que está basada la serie, Southern Vampire Series, de Charlaine Harris. Viví en el noroeste de Louisiana muchos años, en una ciudad a un paso de Bon Temps, el pueblo de ficción donde tiene lugar la acción de los libros. Mi amor por los edredones y mi interés en la guerra entre los estados nació y creció allí. Me gustó la gente, los paisajes, la comida, y hasta el tiempo (aunque las tormentas me causan aún pesadillas). Las descripciones de Ms. Harris de la gente y los sitios me llevan de vuelta a esos años.
Mi personaje favorito de los libros y la serie es Bill Compton, el vampiro nacido en Bon Temps. Me tiene enamorada! El vampiro Bill fué soldado en las tropas del sur cuando aún estaba vivo. Es el señor sureño con un toque de "no-vivo". Encantador!

So I will be piecing blocks for Confederate Courtship quilt this summer and re-listening to the audiobooks this summer. I'll be updating on the progress.

Asi que pasaré el verano haciendo bloques para el Confederate Courtship y escuchando de nuevo los audiolibros de la serie. Ya os contaré según lo adelante.
